What does a petticoat actually do?
Think of it as your outfit’s secret volume control. You wear a petticoat beneath a full dress or skirt to help the fabric flare out and show off the shape of your swing skirt. A little difference beneath your dress, a big effect in the mirror!
Our own Succubus Clothing 50’s petticoats are made from 100% nylon. Two tiered outer layers and gathered lower edges create airy volume. The attached underskirt adds a layer between you and the voluminous fabric. This is our own design, available exclusively at Succubus.
How do you wear a petticoat? Let it swing!
Give all that volume some room
A swing dress, circle skirt or another generously cut skirt makes a lovely partner for your petticoat. The outer fabric needs enough room to fall smoothly over it. A close-fitting pencil skirt doesn’t offer that space.
Put on your petticoat and gently spread the layers around your body. Let your dress or skirt fall over it, smooth the outer fabric with your hands and check that the underskirt hasn’t folded over anywhere. Ready? Time for a test twirl!
A hidden helper or a cheeky little edge?
For a classic look, keep your petticoat hidden just above the hem. Want to let it flirt a little? Deliberately leave a small edge peeking out.
Measure from where you wear the waistband to the hem of your skirt. Compare this with the length in the product size chart, as it may vary by size. That way, you decide how much petticoat the world gets to see.
Show your colours

How do you store a petticoat? Give it some breathing space
After all that twirling, your petticoat deserves a rest. Give it some room in your wardrobe so the layers aren’t flattened between piles of clothing for long periods.
- Store it clean and completely dry.
- Lay it loosely on a spacious shelf or fold it over a wide, smooth hanger.
- Avoid sharp clips that could pull at the delicate fabric.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Has it been folded away for a while or travelled in your suitcase? Shake it out gently and separate the layers with your hands. A little patience and fluffing will help it regain its shape. There’s no need to pull hard.
How do you wash a petticoat? A gentle bath, please
Your petticoat doesn’t need washing after every outing. Airing it may be enough. Wash it when necessary and handle the delicate layers gently.
For our own Succubus Clothing petticoats, we recommend hand-washing in a laundry bag. Always check the care label on your own petticoat; its instructions take priority.
- Prepare a mild soapy bath. Use cool to lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent.
- Give it a gentle soak. Put your petticoat in a roomy laundry bag and move it gently through the water. Avoid scrubbing and wringing.
- Rinse thoroughly. Use clean water to remove the detergent.
- Gently press the water out of the fabric. A clean towel can help absorb moisture. Do not twist or wring.
- Let it dry gently. Lay it on a drying rack with the layers loosely spread out, away from direct heat.
Skip the tumble dryer and iron. Is your petticoat completely dry? Shake it out gently and spread the layers again. There’s that swing!
